How to Make a Great Facebook Timeline Cover Photo (Step-by-Step Guide)

As many of you know, Facebook is changing the look of their site from the original layout to the new “Timeline” layout on March 30th. Whether you are a fan of this change or not, you might as well have a page that looks good when Timeline is finally pushed over to all users. The following template can help you make a great looking cover photo and profile picture that tie together seamlessly.

Open up the document in Photoshop and follow these steps to get a seamless look (you can view the Embrace Digital Facebook Page as an example).

1) Find a high-res image you would like to use (we recommend 1200 pixels wide x 1000 pixels high, for the use of this template).

2) Position your image in the layout, covering both the timeline image and the profile pic (if you want a seamless image). Duplicate the image by selecting the image in the layers window, and pressing “command + J”  (or “control + J” on PC).

Use the “clipping mask” function to place it into the shape of the cover image and the profile pic. To do this, place the image above the shape layer, right click your image, and select “create clipping mask” from the dropdown. The image should fit into the “shape” layer, creating a mask that doesn’t show the rest of the image (only the portion within the shape).

3) When you have the design where you want it to be, save the file. First we will create the cover photo. To do this, hide all the layers except for “CoverImage” in the layers window. The background should now be transparent, with only your cover image showing.

Go to the toolbar and choose “Image > Trim > Based on Transparent Pixels” and select Left, Right, Top, and Bottom. Click OK. The transparent background has now been trimmed away, leaving only your cover image. This is the image you will upload to the “cover” area of your Facebook.

4) Repeat the above step with the profile picture layer, but remember to hide the “Border (hide this)” layer in photoshop. Upload this to your profile picture area.

5) You’ll probably notice that the images don’t line up at first. Don’t fear! We purposely made the cover image height a bit taller to allow you to reposition thecover image to fit your profile picture. Go to your profile, click the “change cover” button (which appears on hover over your cover image) and select “reposition” from the drop-down. With a bit of finesse, you’ll have a seamless cover image and Facebook picture!

** As an added bonus, you can also use pointers, or some other “callout,” to point your users to your apps using your cover image. We have placed the app spaces where they will appear on Facebook, so you can make a call to action (like “check out my music” or “online store”). Enjoy.

If you need assistance in making this change to your page, give us a call or email us through our contact section.

Entertainment Beats Out Other Industries in FB Advertising Campaigns

When observing trends in Social Media or Entertainment, you will notice a large shift happening in the way movies are marketed. This applies to films across the board, but is especially noticeable with small to medium-sized, “Niche” films. Media Buys and Marketing Spends are allocating less towards traditional media such as Commercial and Print, and moving more towards digital media.

A new study has revealed that the entertainment industry is enjoying better click through rates than any other industry in regards to FB Advertising Campaigns, showing that fans, as well as marketers, are embracing this shift. According to AdParlor who analyzed 1000 different campaigns from September to February, “…the movies and entertainment category saw a 0.114% click through rate on average worldwide for ads on Facebook between Sept. 1 and Feb. 27″ combined.

Taking into consideration that the average CTR on Facebook is 0.04%, the entertainment industry generates five times the amount of click through rates compared to merchant and banking services because it can be seen as more exciting by consumers. Via Marc Graser from Variety.

At Embrace, we are excited about this shift in media and even more thrilled to see that consumers enjoy interacting with entertainment content inside social media. From a marketer’s perspective, consumer preference to interact with entertainment content only doubles down on the election to use digital media as their primary marketing tool because of it’s obvious advantage, quantification.

While the above diagram is overly simplified, it shows the missing link that Movie Marketers have been searching for, the correlation between specific Ad campaign spending and individual ticket sales. As an added bonus, a film property can grow it’s Facebook community and sell tickets with one spend. Therefore supporting the films theatrical release and setting the film up for success in home entertainment campaign, months down the road.

Embrace Digital Serves Up Komida Gourmet Tacos

Embrace Digital is pleased to announce our newest client, Komida.  Best known for their fusion tacos, mixing Latin and Asian influences, Komida serves some of the best tacos in Los Angeles.

For the past two years, a gourmet taco stand was featured at the Yamashiro Farmers Market, curated by Yamashiro’s Executive Chef, Brock Kleweno.  Once the word got out, patrons were willing to wait in hour-long lines to get the tacos, and it was obvious that Komida had a future outside the farmer’s market.

Simple + Affordable + Gourmet – KOMIDA is revolutionary quick service concept merging the best elements of the Farmers Market explosion with affordable high-end Latino products. We are quick service with quick service pricing, yet flavors that rival any fine dining experience. We like to think of ourselves as L.A. Cuisine – a convergence of Latino Asian…quick…simple…but sophisticated. We are the future of Quick Service. From now on everyone will expect more for less. KOMIDA delivers on these expectations.

Embrace Digital is looking forward to partnering with Komida to create and execute an effective digital marketing strategy that takes advantage of their “Voted Best Tacos in Town at Taste of LA 2011″ distinction.

ReGeneration Music Project World Premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theater

On Thursday, February 9, Embrace Digital attended the Re:Generation Music Project World Premiere at the Graumann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

The Re:Generation Music Project is a music documentary about how five distinctive DJs turn the tables on the history of music. It follows DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Skrillex, Pretty Lights and The Crystal Method as they each take a specific musical style they were assigned and recreate it by writing and recording a completely new track with a group of influential collaborators in that genre. Each artist discovers how music can positively transcend time and help influence the future.

There was a Q&A session after the film with KCRW’s Jason Bentley interviewing all the DJ’s. Afterwards, there was a meet and greet with the artists for those that attended the premiere.

You can still see this documentary in select theaters for two days only, February 16th and 23rd. Buy your tickets here.

Embrace Digital Brings Diamond Carter into the Mix

Embrace Digital is pleased to announce a new client out of our L.A. office, Diamond Carter, a music project based in Los Angeles. Embrace is handling social media, website design, and art direction for the project.

Growing up in Orange County, Mr. Carter first picked up the guitar at the age of 13 and hasn’t looked back. By 18, he had sold everything he had to tour the U.S., playing at any venue that allowed him, and getting paid in only food and gas money. After finally being discovered in Los Angeles after numerous band changes, the Diamond Carter music project was born.

Inspiration for Diamond Carter project came from the lyric “Diamond Carter was a writer, and a singer too” from Mark Levine’s album ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’. His music is rooted through many different influences and genres including Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Louvin Brothers, and Brian Jonestown Massacre amongst others.

Please take some time to discover Diamond Carter by checking out his music, along with FB and Twitter for constant updates. Embrace Digital looks forward to supporting the growth of a great musician.

Ayn Rand Premiere in Los Angeles

On January 17th, our client Mad Universe held a premiere for their documentary film “Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged” at the ArcLight Theaters in Los Angeles. The film is being released in 60 markets throughout the country for two days only, January 17th and 26th. Response thus far has been fantastic, with many theaters selling out in advance.

The documentary is focused on Ayn Rand’s life and the journey that she embarked on while writing her infamous novel, Atlas Shrugged. The film contains a central theme that demonstrates many of Rand’s predictions in Atlas Shrugged which are being reflected in our present day reality.

Following the Los Angeles premiere, there was a Q&A session with Chris Mortensen, director of “Ayn Rand & the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged”; Yaron Brook, president of the Ayn Rand Institute; and John McIntyre, co-founder of Health Care Microsystems. They offered insight into the film and answered audience questions.

If you missed the January 17th dates, there is still another opportunity to view the documentary on January 26th at select locations. Embrace Digital recommends you check out this film!

Atlas Shrugged Documentary Limited Release

Embrace Digital’s most recent client, is a documentary film based on the novel titled “Atlas Shrugged” by Russian-born fiction novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand.

The epic novel tells the tale of the United States in a time of a Capitalist utopia, and Rand’s own philosophical view of objectivism which is an underlying theme.  Atlas Shrugged was originally released in 1957 and since then has remained on the New York Times bestseller list. Recently, the book has been thrust into the news spotlight due to the fact that it mirrors the current global economic climate.

All of these truths suggest that perhaps the text is not fiction, but instead should be viewed as a prophecy that predicted today’s modern social and economic situation.

The documentary film entitled “Ayn Rand and the Prophecy of Atlas Shrugged” will be released in select theaters on January 17th and 26th, 2012 throughout the United Sates. Embrace Digital has been engaged in this project to increase the awareness and attendance of these screenings through targeted promotion via social media.  We look forward to this unique challenge to drive moviegoers to watch this film in theaters.
